Glory in the Ordinary Review

Today I am here to review Glory in the Ordinary, by Courtney Reissing.

Now, if you are anything like me, you may HATE housework.

One of the reasons I abhor housework is that it is so boring and repetitive.

Day in, day out.

All you are doing is the same dang thing, without much to show for it.

No. Change. Whatsoever.

In this book, Courtney carries the main theme that your average everyday housework is ultimately fulfilling the Glory of God. She discusses how the fall made work to be not fun with the curse, whereas before it was supposed to be a thing to enjoy.

She then goes on to explain how she believes heaven is the image of what this world was supposed to be like before the fall. We are not going to be sitting around playing harps when we cross over, according to Courtney. Instead, God is going to assign an eternal task for us that we will enjoy (instead of dread) doing immensely. Our work on earth, according to the author, is made to prepare us for the work we shall be doing in heaven.

Courtney then goes on to say that housework is designed to love the people who live in your home through serving them, which I liked. Lately, I have been struggling with the idea of showing, rather than telling love, and to realize that housework is one way in which one might be able to accomplish this baffled me.

One concept I liked (coming from the perspective of me being a history graduate) was how the author ended up connecting how housewives were viewed back in the '60s vs. how they are viewed today. Back in the '60s, "housewifery" was the premier calling for a woman, with the husband being the main breadwinner of the family. Now, people almost look down their noses at women who stay at home, rebuking them for being a setback to feminism. There has also been a shift in vocabulary, from being a housewife to being a "stay-at-home". A woman is judged for how well she raises her kids, and by how many activities she has crammed into their schedule that she has to shuttle them to and from. More and more women who have even aspired to have professional, successful careers often end up being stay-at-home-moms, according to what statistics are telling us.

A final point that made me smile was how we as women often expect ourselves to be "wonder women" and get everything done. As a matter of fact, if you talk with other women, their houses are very likely not all perfectly clean ever.

One thing that kind of bothered me about this book was how she framed the very idea of rest. Courtney claimed something we all know, that rest is not a sin because God rested. Yet, she also from my perspective had an idea of rest that, if you were not "resting" by doing a fun activity or having down time with your family, then it was basically a sin. This is implied with how she addressed the theme of housework as being an act of selflessly serving the family around you. If you are not "serving" your family by relaxing with them, I feel as though she implies that you should not be "resting" at all.

In some ways, I do see her point. We are supposed to be a communal species as human beings, striving for each others company. Yet, if you are an introvert like me, being around people, including your family, can absolutely EXAUST you sometimes. You need "alone time" to recharge, otherwise you and everyone else will most likely be suffering for it. There needs to be a balance. Relax with your family, then realize when you have to be alone to recharge.

Overall, I would like to give this book four out of five stars. While I did not agree with all her points, for the most part, Courtney has helped me to, at least start, shifting my perspective of housework. Pick up this book today at lifeway.com or at any Lifeway Christian store in your area!

Hello There

Old Man Pablo
Yeah, I felt like pulling an Obi-Wan from Revenge of the Sith. Anywho, just wanted to give you guys an update over the first couple months of the year!

A Beautiful Vintage photo of grandma

It has been rough, to be honest. First, I had to get over a cold that my brother was so nice to share (NOT!!!!!!), that knocked me off my feet for quite a bit. Then, Pablo, "my horse", passed away quite suddenly on New Years Day. It hit me hard. Just when I thought I had made my way out of the pit of depression and despair that hat dragged me down for most of the last summer, there I was back in it.

After that, my mom, who had to get radiation on her head since cancer has spread to her skull, started to lose her hair. It's is a bitter pill to swallow. I fear for her.I also fear for myself with all the health issues I have, some of which that are indirectly related to my mom's health issues.

Then, my "WONDERFUL" brother, had to be nice and share the cold that he had never really gotten over before he left on his trip to London With my AGAIN once he came back (yay...) :/

Now, one thing to note is that when I get sick, my immune system might as well be nonexistent, as I am sick for a WHILE. Around this time (the week before Valentine's day, to be exact). We received news that my grandma on my mom's side was not doing well at all. She ended up passing away on February 10th, and her funeral was Valentine's day. The hardest part about this was that I could barely visit her by her bed to keep watch with being sick, without fear of contaminating other residents in her retirement home.

So, it was pretty much right after I had started to accept one loss, I was sucker punched yet again with another, even BIGGER one...

Some days, or most days, I tend to wear my emotions on my sleeve. When it comes to things like death, though, I realize that I internalize a lot.

It's been hard. I have not wanted to "people" in the weeks since my grandma's funeral, wanting very much to stick with my routine of going to work, and going home to watch my Olympic figure skating and Gonzaga Basketball as I struggled to process what was happening, as well as what had happened.

I am, to be quite frank and honest with you all, quite sick of all the curveballs being thrown in the way of me and my family.

I have had the tendency to look to God and say, "Get us the heck out of here!!! We have had enough of this storm!!!!!!!!! If you really loved us, you would let us have some 'calm' waters for once".

Could it be though, that we are too busy being distracted by all that weighs us down that we don't see it when we are in calm waters?

If only we could have A, B, and C work out. Then life would be calmer for us.

At least until the next two by four comes to smack you upside the head, because life just ain't all sunshine and roses!

With being the glass half empty person I am, It has been quite a long time since I felt like I have been in calm waters.

In reality, I have been blessed and am more fortunate than most people.

In other news, in the middle of this last week, I gave myself a kick back into gear, starting to take baby steps working back into the rhythm of accomplishing all the goals I had set for this new year. Which leads me to what I want for this blog.

I have decided to just give you guys the rest of my Christmas story I started, that I ended up being too sick to finish back at that time. You may be rolling your eyes at this, yet if I don't finish it SOON I am almost surely guaranteed to forget about it. It is still winter where I am living, which quite frankly has only made my depression worse. Christmas, Loki's shenanigans, and messing with my characters is something that makes me happy, though, so it is gonna be finished!

Then I am going to finish and post the rest of my "going back in time" Kennedy story I started, well, "back in time".

I have just felt the strong urge to finish things I have started in my writing. As many plot bunnies, I have running around in my head at the moment, they are going on the back burner until some of my other stories are done.

I want to eventually post this separate short story that sprouted out of my ongoing Ben and Chloe novel as well, about the acapella band's adventure at the Country Music Awards!

So, if things go as planned and yours truly can keep on top of things, hopefully, all these things will happen with this blog!

Yours truly,

the "Emster"

I like to sit by the tree sipping a hot cup of coffee while I journal in my bible!

2 // Reading of the Christmas story, lighting the tree – Which tradition is most special to you?

Both. It's important to remember to keep Christ at the center of Christmas, so that is why reading of the Christmas story is special to me. Yet, I love Christmas decorations oh-so-much, so that is why lighting the tree is special to me too!

5 // Trees and nativities, bells and bows – Do you have a favorite Christmas decoration?

The tree, hands down. I am always sad when we put it away for the year after the season.

6 // From the prophets to the gospels, the timeless story is woven. Which Bible passage that speaks of our Savior birth holds a special place in your heart?

Luke 1:26-38 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Gabriel Predicts Jesus’ Birth

26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And the angel came to her and said, “Rejoice, favored woman! The Lord is with you.”[a] 29 But she was deeply troubled by this statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be. 30 Then the angel told her:

Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
31 Now listen:
You will conceive and give birth to a son,
and you will call His name Jesus.
32 He will be great
and will be called the Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give Him
the throne of His father David.
33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever,
and His kingdom will have no end.
34 Mary asked the angel, “How can this be, since I have not been intimate with a man?”[b]

35 The angel replied to her:

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore, the holy One to be born
will be called the Son of God.
36 And consider your relative Elizabeth—even she has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called childless. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.”

38 “I am the Lord’s servant," said Mary. “May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel left her.

7 // Glittery snowflakes and shimmering balls to angels and one-of-a-kind creations. Do you have a favorite tree ornament?

Favorite tree ornament??? Is there such a thing??? Pics are listed below of my favorites :D

This ornament is representation of an old historic theater I have in my town. Plus, it is the same theater I just happened to see my first Home Free concert at. Therefore, this ornament kind of has double meaning for me both for my love of history and my love of Home Free!

My "Pablo" ornament. My parents bought this for me a few years ago as it looked like the horse I love and ride, whose name is of course, Pablo. :D

I was gifted this one last year by a friend! I love this because it represents my favorite Home Free singer, bassman Tim Foust. It is in fact, signed. Plus it has a lyric to one of my favorite Home Free songs on the back, Everything Will be Okay!

My all time favorite movie villain. Enough said :D

I love this ornament first and foremost for my love of studying the American Civil War, then for what it stands for in this day and age.

8 // Red and green, silver and gold, even purple and blue! What's your favorite color scheme this time of year?

Good ol' fashioned red and green for me.

9 // Between the old and the new, the classics and the cartoons, which Christmas movie do you come back to year after year?

Oh goodness... so in no particular order ;)

1. Both Home Alone's 1&2
2. Christmas Vacation
3. Christmas with the Kranks
4. Holiday in Handcuffs
5. White Christmas
6. Holiday Inn
7. A Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart
8. All three Narnia movies (there is just something about those movies around Christmas in particular that makes them really special :D )
9.  A Charlie Brown Christmas
10. The Santa Claus
11. Christmas Eve
12. The Polar Express

10 // Pies and cakes, cookies and sweets. What's your favorite Christmas treats?

A good peppermint mocha on a cold winter day is my favorite Christmas treat!

It's Been a Long Road

Hello, y'all! Guess who is back?

You know when you have all these grand plans for your blog at the beginning of the year, then you turn around and realize the year is almost over?

It has been a year full of trials, to say the least.

I have been suffering emotionally under the new job I have had since college graduation. Let me just say that dealing with difficult customers is extremely trying if you are a SEVERE introvert and are EXTREMELY self-critical. Yet, God has been teaching me a lot through this job, and it has led me to get a position that will be more beneficial to me emotionally.

I also fell into a pretty bad depression over the summer. I guess you could say it was a combination of hating my job and hating the idea of being out of school (as much as I was initially excited about it, HA!). Needless to say, it was not a very fun summer for me, but thanks to new medication, I finally feel as though as if I am starting to get better!

Now, the holiday season is just around the corner yet again, and I am super excited for it! I have decided to revamp this blog, though I honestly do not know what is gonna come of it. I really want to become more dedicated to my writing, as well as read all the books I have sitting on my bookshelf that I have yet to read, too!

So, I guess that I am thinking, or hoping that this blog will hold me more accountable to the goals I have. Most of you reading this are probably in the middle of NaNo like me, and those of you who are are probably thinking I am crazy to even try revamping this blog in the middle of it ;)

Like I said, I don't know what is gonna become of this blog, but feel free to buckle in, and come along for the ride!

My current favorite Home Free song for your enjoyment!

Blog Tour: Racing for Time

Hello, my fine friends and writers. Today I am part of a blog tour for Olivia Nickerson's new book, Racing for Time!

About the book:

After a frightening car crash that lands Janefer and her best friend Melanie in the hospital, Janefer is set on bringing the culprit to justice. When Melanie is found to be missing, Janefer is even more determined to discover the person behind it all.

Through a maze of lies and deceit, spiritual questions arise, leaving her confused and troubled. As Janefer races to gather clues leading to Melanie, she gradually learns to trust God with her life, no matter what the outcome.

Can Janefer find out the truth before Melanie is hurt--or worse?

Time is ticking.

My review: Four stars

I LOVE crime shows and mystery novels. If you are anything like me, then this book will be a treat for you.

First and foremost, I found myself really connecting with the protagonist Janefer. While I am a Christian, as I have recently wound up in the hospital two times in less than a month, I also have found myself questioning the goodness of God much like the main character.

Plus, like Janefer, I also have a parent with cancer, so the ending was a real heart breaker for me.

I also have to take a step back here and applaud her best friend Mel for having the courage she did when faced with a seemingly hopeless situation. I can only hope that I can be as strong as she was whenever I am faced with daunting odds.

The only problem I had with this book was that I guessed who the culprits were early on. Sure, it is a short novella and a fast-paced mystery, but I felt like there could have been more twists and turns to make things not so obvious in the beginning.

Overall, this is a very well written Christan mystery novella that has a great theme of salvation, as well as trusting God even when bad things happen.

2017 Story Ideas

Hello everyone! Hope your first two days of 2017 went well! I go back to school today *sighs*. Oh well, such is life.

Today I will be giving a general overview on some of the story ideas I would like to have written by the end of the year.

First and foremost, is Saving Camelot. I know, I know, some of you might be thinking, was she not going to finish that story last month? Unfortunately, life happened, and that ended up not being the case. My goal is to finish it this month though, hopefully starting next week!

Then, there is my book from NaNo, Surviving the Odds. For details on that little project of mine, please click here to go back to my beautiful books post from October.

Now, you guys got a certain peek at a Finn and his sweetheart in A Finnish Christmas. Armo and Adeline are going to ride to tell more of their adventures! Some of their tales will include (feel free to guess what some of these stories will be about in the comments):

  • A Wacky Proposal
  • The World Series
  • Their Shadow
  • Science Fiction Nutcase
  • Hard Choices
  • The Frights of Life
  • True Beauty
This is my hopeful project for Camp NaNo in April. I may do another beautiful books post towards the end of March to go into detail about this set of stories.

My next project is tentatively titled the Councillor and the Cowgirl, which I believe I detailed in an earlier post but will go ahead and reiterate here, so that everything is in one place.

A young lawyer meets a young woman who just moved into a sort of backwards town to take a job train horses. He immediately gets caught up in shenanigans with his two brothers as he tries to woo this lady's affections. Later, shortly after they are married, the councillor is threatened for a case he took on, and begins to withdraw from his new wife and brothers because of it, fearing for his life and the lives of those he loves.

Then there is the case of my two sisters featured in Saving Camelot, Jasmine and Victoria. I really want to write a sort of thriller with both of these sisters at the center of the action. It will involve international abductions, shootings, mystery, and intrigue at every turn!

There you have it! Some of the writing ideas I have for 2017. Saving Camelot is a priority right now, along with finishing the first draft of Surviving the Odds. By the end of the year, my hope is to have at least the first  draft of all of these stories done, along with the SECOND draft of Surviving the Odds finished.

What are some of your writing goals for 2017? Feel free to comment below!
